Cast Your Cares and God Will Sustain

Psalm 55:22 has been huge for me. We all have cares, anxieties, concerns. As Christians, we have the privilege of casting them upon the Lord so we can have His peace (1 Peter 5:7, Philippians 4:6-7).

What strikes me, however, is the vivid picture of what God does when we cast our cares on Him.

Sustain.

That beautiful word is made even richer when you dig into the Hebrew. It is the word כּוּל (kūl). The verb carries three primary meanings.

1). To take in, to hold, to contain

When I run to my daddy with troubles, he gives me a big, long hug. He takes me into his arms and holds me there.

God our Father will do the same thing! He takes us into His care and holds, even contains us, there. He is our Refuge. Surely, we desire to be sheltered within the towering walls of His care.

2.) To hold up, to protect

Our cares burden us. They are heavy and drain our energy. We come to God weakened, and He holds us up. He supports us.

God is our great Shield. Being upheld by His everlasting arms, we are protected from all the cares, dangers, and battles of the world. Safe.

3.) To nourish, to provide with sustenance

We all need to eat to live, right? Spiritually, we need to live on “every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Deuteronomy 8:3).

When we cast our cares on the Lord, He gives us the nourishment we need – physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually.

God cares for us deeply. Richly. Abundantly.

So, cast your cares on the Lord and He will take you in, uphold and nourish you.
