Michael’s Gentle Wife:
A Family Love Story
Karen Andrea
Genre: Adult/Young Adult/Wives and Mothers/Family/Historical Fiction/Christian Fiction
Winter had been long and wearying. Now that spring is finally blooming, Michael Weaver voices his hope that Carol will bloom again, too. Baby Eliot requires most of her time, yet Carol is eager to shoulder her responsibilities again. And to start walking in an outdoor world that is free from the gloom of winter. Sudden changes make her load both heavier and easier.
Will all the differences increase or crush Carol’s trust?
Then, a flashy new visitor comes next door to Blackberry Inn. His charming ways alarm Carol and time around him requires tedious balance. Meanwhile, she and Michael face new challenges as he begins work anew and Ian offers them an extraordinary gift.
Will Carol’s kindness stand the tests of this new season?
Summer begins to melt the days and the Weaver family finds themselves on the beautiful shore. Carol finds new delights in every adventure with the children and Michael. Intriguing neighbors at Crail Surf soon present ways for all of them to give. However, their vacation isn’t all lovely.
With the sorrow and trouble they encounter, can Carol continue to build joy?
Then, the Weaver family returns home and hurries into their routines. Only Michael’s job is taking more of his time. Also, Carol’s duties as mother, along with guests, demands much attention. She waits for things to settle in a new rhythm, but not without frustration.
Will Carol’s patience be rewarded?
This is Michael’s Gentle Wife by Karen Andreola, a stand-alone Mother Culture® comfort read and Christian historical fiction!
Michael’s Gentle Wife is connected to Mrs. Andreola’s former books, A Pocketful of Pinecones and Lessons at Blackberry Inn, but can be read as a stand-alone. Having read both books beforehand, I can say that they give you a literary advantage. Although not necessary to understanding Michael’s Gentle Wife, the other two books add depth to it.
The novel is set in four parts. Each section builds Carol’s character, but the fruit is best seen in the following part of the story. Keep turning the pages! The chapters are relatively short yet even-paced, so they are great for reading in-between activities and you don’t feel like important facts are rushed.
It is written from Carol’s perspective. Carol is a studier, of people, things, nature, and concepts. She writes in a sweet, simple way that connects thoughts and creates interesting mental dialogue. Sometimes, it’s like you sat down to a cup of tea with her.
Carol’s perspective is a sensitive and personal one that I found relatable without being too deeply attached to her feelings, misgivings, or longings. It’s a book where you are a friend, coming alongside Carol to be encouraged, not to become Carol. I enjoyed the distinction.
The culture is impeccably accurate and easy to immerse in. Rather than feeling like she is building the culture, the authoress gives us an established sense. Even when embarking into a new sphere of the land, the characters walk in upon a founded culture that is thriving with diversity.
The established culture makes problems, discussions, and thought-processes even more real. Michael, Carol, and their three children face similar circumstances to our modern world without having to be vague or obscure for a more “relatable” read. It struck me in the third part just how much these characters truly read like they lived in that timeframe, rather than being placed into it.
The pages hold beautiful discoveries of nature and wildlife. It features a discovery-and-narrative guided homeschooling that is sensitively paced and structured to meet the individual child’s needs.
Speaking of children, this book has plenty of child-oriented activities! Baby Eliot goes nearly everywhere with Carol. All three children have the caring attention of both parents and are involved in daily life as much as possible. Eliot, Emily, and Don add pizzazz, humor, and a little bit of gravity to the storyline that cannot be replaced!
The cast of characters is flavorful and rather large, but homey. Each person has their place in the pages and their role in the routines or novelties. With the focus on Carol and her family, the book contains a close-knit feel while still gaining an others-focused perspective.
Michael’s Gentle Wife is technically also a romance – the happily-ever-after of a married couple. Michael and Carol share moments of hand-holding, kisses, hugs, and some sweet dialogue. Everything else is off the pages, making it a clean read even for unmarried young adults while still showing some of the exclusive delights of marriage.
I’m raising a Hallelu Yah! Praise be to God, who created and established marriage as good and beautiful (Genesis 2:24)! I’m so thankful for this priceless relationship and God’s plan to make it the building block of His culture. And praise be to Jesus, our Heavenly Bridegroom, who has ransomed and cleansed His bride – the Church – and will one day return to dwell with us forever (Ephesians 5:25-27, Revelation 19:11)! Hallelu Yah!
Now, happily-ever-after, in this book, doesn’t mean everything is whimsical and perfect. It means disappointing, tough, and terrible things can happen, yet be faced with trust, kindness, joy, and patience.
Faith in God is foundational to the story. The Gospel is clearly proclaimed. Husband and wife discuss important topics by keeping the Bible as their standard. The characters’ faith is reasonable and sincere. It is shown practically through family devotions, discussions, witnessing, acts of kindness, business, and other Christ-like actions in the day-to-day, menial things.
Did I mention there is also a redemption story woven through these pages? I loved it!
I’m raising a Hallelu Yah! (The bigger the book, the more we can seek Him and praise Him, right?) In Jesus Christ, we have received the gift of the Holy Spirit, and we may walk in a way that bears fruit for God’s glory (Galatians 5:22-25). Through every trial, the Holy Spirit enables us to grow in joy, perseverance, character, and hope (Romans 5:3-5)! Hallelu Yah!
Michael’s Gentle Wife celebrates marriage, children, and a growing, relational church. It celebrates doing things God’s way, according to the Bible, and seeking after God’s kingdom in the everyday things we do. It inspires a biblical view of being a wife, mothering, homemaking, friendship, and witnessing.
And it ended too quickly. 590 pages and I still wanted a part five! Good news is, I can read it over again.
I heartily recommend you enjoy this beautiful, biblical 5-star comfort read!
Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…
Ephesians 5:22&25
