In The Lamplighter, by Maria S. Cummins, there is a scene in which your heroine must leap for her life, not knowing if she will make it to safety. The title of the next chapter? Suspense.
My siblings have put up with a lot of cliffhangers in my writing. The cliffhangers of missing characters, plot holes, chapters in-between not being written yet. Even more recently, waiting on Betrayed’s publication so they can all have a copy and read it again.
As an authoress, I like writing cliffhangers. I enjoy the persistence of readers when they are hungry for more to read, so eager to see what comes next. Their reactions are great! Like that time I got hit in the head with a pillow. Yup, fantastic.
Often times, I know what’s coming next and I’m most excited to see a reader reach the next part at just the right time.
Similarly, Jesus is the Author of our lives and our faith (Gen. 1:27 & Heb. 12:2). Sometimes, it seems like He leaves us in suspense. We are waiting…for what? What comes next? Where will we be?
As a reader, I don’t like cliffhangers. The “what’s next” urge is a little exciting and quite engaging. But, it can also be wearying and frustrating.
When we’re waiting on God, it seems the excitement and engagement completely vanishes.
But, consider these Scripture verses about waiting.
“Lord, I wait for You; You will answer, Lord my God.” Ps. 37:32
This verse implies we are engaged with the LORD. Actively praying, seeking, and asking. In the waiting, God desires His relationship with you to grow. How wonderful is that?
“I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in His word I put my hope. My soul waits for the LORD more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.” Ps. 130:5-6
Here is expectation! When our family reads this one aloud, we often stop and wonder, “Didn’t I just read that?” Yes. The author penned it twice to show us how eagerly he was waiting for the LORD, like the most enthusiastic reader, perched on the edge of his seat as the story unfolds!
Read a few more!
“Wait on the LORD, be strong and take heart, and wait on the LORD.” Psalm 27:14
“We wait in hope for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.” Ps. 33:20
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.” Ps. 37:7
“Yes, Lord, walking in the way of Your laws, we wait for You; Your name and renown are the desire of our hearts.” Isaiah 26:8
“Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore He will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for Him!” Isa. 30:18
“Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides You, who acts on behalf of those who wait for Him.” Isa. 64:4
“Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.” Jude 1:21
Be Strong. Take Heart. Hope for the LORD. Be Still. Patient. Walk in His Ways. Keep yourselves in God’s Love. This is what we do in the waiting! It’s the purpose of suspense. The outcome? We are blessed and it is good.
And God? Our Help. Our Shield. He will Answer. Turns to You. Hears Your Cry. Gracious. Compassionate. Works Justice. He Acts on behalf of those who wait for Him. And Brings You to Eternal Life.
Maybe you feel like your life is in suspense right now. You don’t know what’s coming next, and you wonder if you’ll come out on the other side battered and bruised, with dreams shattered.
God is a trustworthy Author. He knows what is coming next, and it’s for your good and His glory. Every time. He wants you to reach the end of this suspense at just the right time.
We should be eager, perched on the edge of our seats, to watch the next good and glorious thing unfold in our very lives and faith.
And it is unfolding…moment by moment.
