Things I Love About God as an Author

In the Bible, God reveals many names and titles that rightly represent Himself to His people. In Hebrews 12:2, it says, “Fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith.”

Today, I thought I would share some things I love about God being an author – things that unique to Him and things we ought to strive for as reflections of Him!

He is the first author ever!

God created the idea of story-making, story-telling, authoring. He set the standard for it. He told the first and best parables and historical accounts. In fact, God has always existed, so He can share accounts which we can never tell!

Genesis 1:1 – “In the beginning, God…”

He is the author of life!

Right at the beginning, in Genesis, we find God speaking life into existence. From light, sky, and sea to land, plants, and animals. Then, He created mankind in His own image and breathed the breath of life in him. And, because God is the author of life, He can give life at any time – even raising men from the dead!

John 11:25 – “I am the Resurrection and the Life…!”

He is the author of faith!

God created us to have faith in Him. He has shown us what it means to have faith in Him and how to not break faith with Him. He creates it, defines it, teaches it, keeps it.

I cannot even imagine what it would be like to create something as complex as faith – the ability to completely trust in God, have full confidence in Him, and have such conviction in one’s very soul that life or death doesn’t matter! It’s an enigma.

Hebrews 12:2 – “Fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith…”

He’s a Holy-Ghost-writer!

Although God most certainly could have taken up the task of penning, typesetting, and binding His work, God chose instead to use human instrumentation. He inspired about 30 different men from a variety of backgrounds – fishermen, a doctor, kings, shepherds, historians, a former Pharisee, and more. By the Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost, if you will), God guided these men to write His story in a physical form.

1 Timothy 3:16 – “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful to teaching, correcting, proof, and training in righteousness.”

He has over 50 “pen-names”!

Okay, really, God just has over fifty names. Names which He gave to those who were seeking Him to reveal to them Who He is. You might know God by one of His other “pen names” – Adonai, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Jesu, Elohim, Abba Father.

Isaiah 9:6 – “…and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

He made a true living book!

Get this, God’s Book isn’t just for reading…it reads you. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

He touches the hearts of His readers like no one else!

God writes His letter on paper and on the hearts of men. God authored the connection we gain from written things. God not only touches our intellect, He touches our hearts and souls with His work. Any connection we have when reading a book that reflects His should be attributed to His amazing ability to connect intellect, heart, and soul.

He interacts with His readers all the time!

God doesn’t put up a blog or publish a book and then disappear for who knows how long because He has other things going on. Nope. Our omnipresent God is with us all the time, listening, watching, helping…being God. He even interacts with us as we are reading His work!

Hebrews 13:5b – “Never will I leave you, Never will I forsake you.”

He’s the most wonderful writing mentor!

After all, He designed the whole concept and set the standard of authoring. He’s got it all figured out from the first words of the rough drafts to the ways we share it with others.

I’ve spent only half of my authoring journey purposing to seek God as my mentor, not only in writing but all of life. There’s no corner I’ve backed myself up into that He couldn’t get me out of. There’s no plot twist He hasn’t inspired. There’s no marketing strategy He didn’t teach me. Whether it was through His people, His word, or His inspiration, I’ve found God to be the most wonderful writing mentor!

I highly recommend Him!

(Take me seriously. Make God the One you turn to in every single area of life. He’s active in the little details of life – like writing – and the big details – like salvation.)

James 1:5 – “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given him.”

He never gets tired of doing it over again.

Much of an author’s job is to refine what has been created. God tediously authored down the repetitious patterns of sin, discipline, and restoration and the laws for His people so we would know for certain that what He says is true. It’s no trouble for Him to say it over again!

Furthermore, man (from the rebellion of man until present day) continuously runs away from God and needs to be brought back, forgets and needs to be reminded, forsakes God and needs to be disciplined. Yet, God never tires of doing it over again! He is actively part of what He has authored in order to redeem, help, guide, encourage, discipline, and (ultimately) bring us and keep us in relationship with Him.

He’s perfect at it!

God doesn’t make mistakes. Every word He wrote is perfect. Every character He created is perfect. Every twist in the plot, every marriage, every mystery, every perspective, every detail is absolutely, without a doubt perfect. Which means, I can trust every word He has written.

1 Samuel 22:31 & Psalm 18:30 – “As for God, His way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in Him.”

He’s the main character!

How many books have you read where the author is the main character? I’ve only read one. Through God’s in-depth account, we get to know HIM in detail.

Exodus 29:46 – “They will know that I am the Lord their God, who brought them out of Egypt so that I might dwell among them. I am the Lord their God.”

He wrote the most amazing, complex story EVER!

Let me get this straight: God created man, man rebelled and spiraled so far into sin and corruption that God sent a global catastrophic flood, sparing only eight people. Then, God raised up new nations of people, they rebelled, and He chose one people – Israel – as His special nation. Three generations later, God’s people are in captivity, so God raises up an Israelite Egyptian prince who is tending sheep for his Midian father-in-law (talk about complex). God sends ten plagues on the nation of Egypt, proving He is the LORD, and then has His people come out of Egypt.

Then, God gives His people Israel commandments to keep so they can be holy and set apart, right before He leads them on a conquest of their Promised Land. After that, the people rebel (go figure, I mean seriously), and God raises up pagan nations to oppress them. God sends judges to rescue the people and renews His covenant with them. Later, the people ask for a human king like the other nations who are oppressing them. So, God gives them a king and that starts the series of crowns in Israel and Judah. Finally, the people have rebelled so many times and turned their hearts away from God, that He sends them into exile from their land.

Then, comes Cyrus – some Persian king – who God uses to set the Israelites free and God’s people return to a portion of their land to rebuild an identity.

Forty-two generations after God chose Israel, He sends the Christ – promised way back when man first rebelled after being created. God sent Jesus Christ, His only Son, to be born of a virgin in a lower room with animals, announced His birth to shepherds, and entrusted His rearing to a carpenter and a peasant girl. Jesus grew up, taught the people, healed many, and irritated the leaders of that day. Then, God sends His Christ, His Son, to die on a cross. Jesus took the sin of the whole world on Him and appeased the wrath of His Father in death. (Yes, He killed the main character.) On the third day, however, God raised His Son back to life!

Through Jesus Christ, God gave His people salvation and a commission: to proclaim the good news of Christ to all nations!

To wrap it all up too quickly, God also revealed the consummation – the end – of all earthly things and the beginning of God’s righteous, eternal reign over all the earth!

That summary is pathetic compared to the actual accounts.

No one can beat His work. In fact, every author or authoress spends their days attempting to recreate His mastery in their “own” works. It’s amazing and complex beyond my understanding.

And He’s not done!

Revelation 20:12 says, “And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.”

There will be books in heaven which record the amazing, complex stories God has authored and is writing right now up until the time of that great Day. Beyond that, though, God has an eternity of authoring He’s already got planned out! Um, did you catch that? Eternity. He has authored all of eternity. Which is…yeah, never mind. I can’t wrap my mind around that.
